A Global Benchmark is Born: WITT and WTA Launch the Core Wellness Standards for Hotels

Big news just dropped in the world of wellness hospitality.

From Tampa, on August 19th, WITT (Wellness in Travel & Tourism) and the Wellness Tourism Association (WTA) officially announced the launch of the Core Wellness Standards for Hotels, the first-ever global framework designed to help hotels authentically and holistically integrate wellness into every guest experience.

But this isn’t just a press release, it’s a call to action for all of us who believe in raising the standard for wellness in hospitality.

Created with the guidance of the WITT Standards Advisory Committee, a global coalition of experts in hospitality, fitness, nutrition, sustainability, and tourism, these standards offer a practical, measurable, and truly transformative roadmap for hotels that want to stand out in an increasingly wellness-driven market.

What’s inside this new framework?

The Core Wellness Standards represent the minimum set of practices a hotel must implement to be considered truly wellness-focused. Based on WITT Certified™’s 100+ rigorous criteria, these essentials cover five foundational pillars:

The 5 Pillars of Authentic Wellness

1. Healthy Eating

  • Offer nutritious, inclusive food options for all dietary needs
  • Recommend local wellness-friendly dining alternatives
  • Provide clean, filtered water throughout the property

2. Holistic Healing

  • Maintain a clean, welcoming, and calming environment
  • Support quality rest through sleep-enhancing design
  • Foster warm, empathetic, and human-centered service

3. Nature

  • Integrate biophilic design elements indoors
  • Offer access to natural or green spaces, even in urban areas

4. Movement

  • Provide spaces and programs for physical activity and movement

5. Local Impact

  • Prioritize local suppliers and equipment
  • Celebrate local culture and community
  • Implement sustainable and environmentally responsible practices

In a world where “wellness-washing” is common, these new standards offer clarity, trust, and a roadmap to real differentiation.

“Wellness travel is no longer niche, it’s a priority for millions,”
says Oxana Spivey, VP of Wellness Standards & Development at WITT.
“These standards give hotels a credible and clear path to creating truly supportive experiences that enhance guest wellbeing.”

Robin Ruiz - Founder & CEO of WITT and President & CEO of the WTA
